Recycled Polyester

Polyester is a synthetic polymer that is widely used in the manufacture of various products, including clothing, plastic bottles, packaging, textiles and many other items. It is known to be tough, durable and easy to maintain, and is also often used in the production of fibers and fabrics due to its ability to retain shape, elasticity and wrinkle resistance.

Did you know that there is pre-consumer recycled polyester and post-consumer recycled polyester?

Pre-consumer recycled polyester is usually provided by factories, which by creating their PET plastic products create waste. On the other hand, there is post-consumer recycled polyester which usually comes from household waste.

Is recycled polyester actually more sustainable than conventional polyester?

Yes, recycled polyester is more sustainable than conventional polyester for several reasons. It reduces the waste that ends up in landfills and even in the oceans, less energy is used to produce recycled polyester which means less pollution by using less energy from fossil fuels.

Does recycled polyester have a lower quality than conventional polyester?

Not necessarily, at a practical level, no differences have been found.

Recycled Nylon

Nylon is a type of synthetic material, more specifically a polymer that is developed through a chemical formula and used for the production of a wide variety of items but mostly used as a textile fiber, since it is known for its strength and durability.

Is Nylon biodegradable?

Unfortunately, no nylon is biodegradable and it takes years to degrade. However, the production of recycled nylon requires significantly fewer steps compared to the conventional process used for virgin nylon. This difference has a significant impact on the fight against climate change by reducing CO2 emissions and excessive water consumption.

How is the nylon recycling process?

Just as with polyester, nylon has a similar process, however, its recycling process has a much higher level of complexity which makes it costly and less attractive. The process includes: collection, cleaning, shredding and melting among other steps.

What are the negative impacts of virgin nylon production?

Greenhouse gases: During their manufacture, greenhouse gases are released into atmosphere. Energy: The production process requires high energy consumption, which contributes to environmental damage and global warming. Water: The use of water in the process is indispensable and its consumption is extremely high since it is used to cool the fiber.
